Lovely Complex or Love★Com

Love★Com (ラブ★コン, Rabu★Kon[color:b177=#00e]?
, sometimes spelled Love*Com), also known as Lovely Complex, is a romantic comedy shōjo manga by Aya Nakahara. It was published by Shueisha in Bessatsu Margaret from 2001 to 2006 and collected in 17 tankōbon volumes. The series is about the romance between a tall girl and a short boy who are treated as a comedy duo by their classmates. In 2004, it received the 49th Shogakukan Manga Award for shōjo.[1]
The story has been adapted as a live-action movie released in 2006, a 24-episode television anime series broadcast in 2007, and an adventure game released for PlayStation 2 released in 2006. Two drama CDs have also been produced. The manga and the live-action movie are licensed in North America by Viz.[2][3]
A sequel series called Love★Com D (or Lovely Complex Deluxe) began serialization in the May 2009 issue of the bimonthly shōjo manga magazine Deluxe Margaret, focusing on Risa's younger brother.[4][5]

Plot
Love★Com is a love story between a boy and a girl in Sakai, Osaka. The girl, Risa Koizumi, is 172 centimetres (5 ft 8 in) tall—much taller than the average Japanese girl. The boy, Atsushi Ōtani, is 156 cm (5 ft 1 in)—way below the height of the average Japanese boy. Because of this, they are called the "All Hanshin Kyojin" after a popular comedy duo that has a similar height difference.
During summer school, a very tall student named Ryouji Suzuki (from another class) shows up and Risa immediately falls for him, as she has had bad luck with boys in the past because she is tall. There is a girl that Atsushi likes as well, so Risa and Atsushi decide to put aside their differences and help each other get their love interests. But as they get to know each other better, Risa's feelings for Atsushi begin to blossom, and her love life gets complicated from there.
One notable fact about Love★Com is that instead of speaking standard Japanese, almost all characters speak in Kansai-ben.[6] Many native Osakan voice actors are employed in the anime. While having one or two characters speaking Kansai-ben is common in many anime shows, having all characters doing so is unusual in media produced for a nationwide audience.
Characters

Risa Koizumi (小泉リサ, Koizumi Risa[color:b177=#00e]?)
Drama role by: Ema Fujisawa, Voiced by: Akemi Okamura
The protagonist, Risa Koizumi is not your average Japanese high school student. Standing 172 centimetres (5 ft 8 in), Risa's height is well above that of most Japanese girls her age (the average height for a female is 158 cm (5 ft 2 in)) Ironically, her surname means 'little spring'. She and other characters compare her to a giraffe. Risa can be impulsive and strong-willed at times, and is rarely willing to display her softer side. She had a crush on Suzuki before he started dating Chiharu. In the beginning of the series, Risa is 170 cm (5 ft 7 in) but she gains 2 cm (0.79 in) in height to become 172 cm (5 ft 8 in).
Risa starts developing feelings for Ōtani and soon admits to herself that she likes him. She then starts trying to confess. Failing the first time, Nobuko and Nakao try to help, Nobuko often giving Risa advice on what to do. Finally she very directly tells him. She immediately regrets it, and tells Ōtani to pretend it never happened, but in spite of herself she tells Ōtani once again that she likes him. Ōtani responds that he couldn't see her as a girlfriend yet, so her new goal is to make Ōtani regret that and make him like her as well. Eventually they start going out.

Atsushi Ōtani (大谷敦士, Ōtani Atsushi[sup][color:b177=#00e]?
)
Drama role by: Teppei Koike, Voiced by: Akira Nagata, Voice actor for game/drama CD: Takahiro Sakurai
Atsushi Ōtani is one of the main characters. He is very short for a boy, standing 156 centimetres (5 ft 1 in). The average height for a male in Japan is 172 cm (5 ft 8 in). Like Koizumi, Ōtani's surname (roughly, "big valley") is a pun on his diminutive stature, and he can be thoughtless and rude; at heart, however, he is kind and a little silly. Ōtani is also the star player of the school basketball team.
His ex-girlfriend is Mayu Kanzaki, the manager of his middle-school basketball team. She broke up with him for a much taller boyfriend, and this is one of the reasons Ōtani is sensitive about his height, but he later finds out that wasn't the reason she broke up with him, it was because she was in love with someone else already who just happened to be tall. He doesn't know quite yet how he feels about Risa, and only responds that he can't see her as a girlfriend (at the moment) when Risa confesses her feelings. But later, he realizes that he does care for her, and he kisses her. Later on in the series, Ōtani gets the wrong idea when Risa keep doing suspicious things with her co-worker Kohori, and then breaks up with her. However, after seeing how devoted she is to him, Ōtani reconsiders and they make up on Christmas Eve.

Nobuko Ishihara (石原信子, Ishihara Nobuko[color:b177=#00e]?)
Drama role by: Nami Tamaki, Voiced by: Saori Higashi
Fashionable and charming, Nobu is Risa's best friend. She is generally wiser than Risa or Chiharu in the ways of love, and is always ready to offer her advice. She's mostly the one who sets up all the 'alone time' moments with Risa and Ōtani, but it usually ends up failing and Risa goes back to her for comfort. She's utterly in love with her boyfriend, Nakao, and is always calling him her 'honey', 'darling', and 'baby'.

Heikichi Nakao (中尾平吉, Nakao Heikichi[color:b177=#00e]?)
Drama role by: Yusuke Yamazaki, Voiced by: Yasuhiko Tokuyama, Voice actor for game/drama CD: Kenjiro Tsuda
Nobu's boyfriend and Ōtani's best friend. Considerate, sensitive, mild-mannered and easygoing. Nakao is absolutely dedicated to Nobu, and when he is not playing basketball with Ōtani, he can usually be found helping with her match-making schemes.

Chiharu Tanaka (田中千春, Tanaka Chiharu[color:b177=#00e]?)
Drama role by: Risa Kudo, Voiced by: Kazuko Kojima
One of Risa's closest friends, Chiharu has such a shy, demure personality that she fears most boys her own age. Ōtani once harbored a crush on her (she resembles Kanzaki, his ex-girlfriend, or vice-versa), but Chiharu instead fell for the gentle Suzuki. The two are now a couple. When everybody starts making college plans, Suzuki and Chiharu applied for the same college, but Suzuki got rejected. He sadly tells Chiharu somebody else would be able to protect her. For the first time, Chiharu breaks out of her shy character and violently lifts up a desk and throws at him (narrowly missing), frustrated that Suzuki thinks he can be replaced. They later make up and Suzuki promises to join Chiharu in her new school the next year.

Ryoji Suzuki (鈴木涼二, Suzuki Ryoji[color:b177=#00e]?)
Drama role by: Hiro Mizushima, Voiced by: Kenjiro Tsuda, Voice actor for game/drama CD: Masaya Onosaka
Chiharu's boyfriend. Suzuki's cool demeanor is often mistaken for standoffishness, and so he has few friends. Oblivious to Risa's crush on him, he develops feelings for Chiharu, and eventually asks her out. Like Chiharu, Suzuki is shy and easily embarrassed. When failed to get into the same university as Chiharu, he promises to try again the year after.
Haruka Fukagawa (深川遥, Fukagawa Haruka[color:b177=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Masaya Onosaka, Voice actor for game/drama CD: Ryotaro Okiayu
A handsome, effeminate young man who developed a childhood crush on Risa when she defended him from a gang of bullies. Though he is popular with many of the other girls (dating seven at a time and towards chapter 52 dates 2 more for a total of nine), he says it's all preparation for when he goes out with Risa, but she always rejects him. According to Risa his grandmother is English. It is also suggested that he might have a crush on Seiko.
Mayu Kanzaki (神崎真由, Kanzaki Mayu[color:b177=#00e]?)
Drama role by: Mio Kato, Voiced by: Yuki Matsuoka
She is the ex-girlfriend of Ōtani. She and Chiharu look very similar, which is the most likely reasons that Ōtani had a crush on Chiharu. They started dating in middle-school, and she was the manager for the school basketball team. She broke up with him, leaving him completely heartbroken, because she was in love with someone else who was tall, causing his inferiority complex.
She invited Ōtani to the team Christmas party, and though Ōtani accepts, he ends up going with Risa to the Umibōzu concert instead. She then visited Ōtani's school to see him, but encountered Risa and Nobu. Risa is convinced that Ōtani is still in love with her, so she goes to clear up a misunderstanding. It is then that Mayu tells him that it was not because of his height that she broke up with him. However, she appears again later, after having broken up with her boyfriend. When she asks to meet up with again, he says "Sorry, I can't because if I do there'll be an idiot who'll cry."
Umibōzu (海坊主[color:b177=#00e]?)
Drama role by: Susumu Terajima, Voiced by: Smokey Tetsuni and Hisao Egawa
A popular rapper that both Risa and Ōtani are avid fans of, leading to Nobu's suggestion that the two are compatible. Risa and Ōtani accidentally cross paths with Umibōzu while on a class trip, and learn that he is actually a devoted family man, with a wife and son with a similar story of how they became a couple. He is named after the mythological creature Umibōzu due to his bald head.
Kuniumi Maitake (舞竹国海, Maitake Kuniumi[color:b177=#00e]?)
Drama role by: Shosuke Tanihara, Voiced by: Junichi Suwabe
Student teacher at Risa and Ōtani's school. Maitake, who prefers the nickname "Maity" or "Mighty", is taller than Risa and extraordinarily good-looking. He bears a resemblance to "Cain-sama", a character in one of Risa's favorite visual novels, and soon acquires a legion of female fans. Gaining affection from Risa, Ōtani soon becomes jealous and quickly starts to realize his feelings for her. It is later revealed he has a fiance - much to the disappointment of his fan club - and that he is Haruka's cousin.
Kiyoji Nakano (中野清司, Nakano Kiyoji[color:b177=#00e]?)
{{Anime voice|[[Masashi Hirose]}}
Homeroom teacher at Risa and Ōtani's class. He gave Risa and Atsushi the nickname "All Hanshin Kyojin."

Mimi Yoshioka (吉岡美々, Yoshioka Mimi[color:b177=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Kae Araki
Ōtani's next door neighbor. She is in love with Ōtani and brings him milk every day in hopes that he would one day grow taller. She is about the same height as Risa. Mimi harbors a burning hatred and jealousy for Risa because (despite her having the same height issue as Mimi) she had successfully won Ōtani's heart. She comically switches between her alter egos, acting sweet towards Ōtani, yet sour to Risa behind his back.

Risa's senpai
Drama role by: Shugo Oshinari

Dancing Yoshiko
Drama role by: Eiji Wentz
Kazuki Kohori (小堀和希, Kohori Kazuki[color:b177=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Hiroki Shimowada
A young student who works part time with Risa in Ikebe. He is notably shorter than her, although slightly taller than Ōtani (158 cm.), and has distinctive black hair with a red streak. Risa soon discovers that he is also an avid Umibouzu fan. He very soon develops feelings for Risa, who admits to herself that she finds him 'cute'. Against her better judgment, Risa attends an Umibōzu concert with Kohori which leads to complications in her relationship with Ōtani. He even proclaims his love for Risa, which causes Ōtani to give
him a right hook. Around chapter 60 in the manga, Risa's classmate Abe is shown to have a crush on Kohori.

Seiko Kotobuki (寿聖子, Kotobuki Seiko[color:b177=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Fujiko Takimoto
A blonde who has a large crush on Ōtani. She is transgendered and biologically a male, stating that God placed her in a wrong body. Prefers to be called Seiko instead of Seishiro (birth name) because it sounds more feminine. She kissed Ōtani when he confessed his feelings but while he is tending to Ōtani's injury in the school infirmary, Ōtani got a shock when he found out Seiko's sex, but still chooses to be his friend.

Ms. Matsubara (松原さん, Matsubara-san[color:b177=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Keiko Tsukamoto
The manager in charge at the restaurant where Risa works. She wears glasses and is quite nosy. When she is intoxicated, she turns wild, and does things that she won't remember the next day.

Kaichou wa maid-sama

Maid Sama!, known in Japan as Kaichō wa Maid-sama! (会長はメイド様!, lit. The President is a Maid![color:f121=#00e]?
) is a shōjo manga series by Hiro Fujiwara. It is currently serialized in Hakusensha's monthly shōjo manga magazine, LaLa. There are currently 12 published volumes under the Hana to Yume Comics imprint in Japan.[1] In their Anime Expo 2008 panel, North American publisher Tokyopop announced its various newly licensed series and that Kaichō wa Maid-sama! would be titled Maid-sama!.[2] An anime adaptation began airing on April 1, 2010.[3]

PlotMain article: List of Maid Sama! characters

Seika High School, once an all-boys school notorious for its wild students and for generally being a terrifying place for girls, has recently become a co-ed school. With the female population still a minority and living in fear of the over-the-top antics of the males, Misaki Ayuzawa takes it into her own hands to reform the school and allow the girls to feel safe in the rough environment.
Training, studying and even becoming the first female student council president of the school, Misaki has gained a reputation among the male students body as an uptight boy-hating dictator and as a shining hope for the teachers and fellow female students. However, despite her tough-as-nails appearance, she secretly works part-time at a maid cafe in order to support her family. Unfortunately, her hard-earned reputation is threatened when the popular, attractive, and somewhat impassive Takumi Usui takes an interest in her after discovering her in a maid uniform after school.

List of Maid Sama! characters

Maid Sama!, known in Japan as Kaichō wa Maid-sama! (会長はメイド様![color:5ec6=#00e]?
), literally The Student Council President is a Maid! is a shōjo manga series by Hiro Fujiwara. The story centers around Misaki Ayuzawa, the student council president of the previously all-boys high school who is particularly strict on the boys, and her relationship with Takumi Usui who after he discovers that Misaki works at a maid café to support her family.

Main characters
Misaki Ayuzawa

Voiced by: Ayumi Fujimura (Anime) [1], Sanae Kobayashi (Drama CD)

The protagonist of the story. A 16 year old girl, Misaki Ayuzawa (鮎沢 美咲, Ayuzawa Misaki[color:5ec6=#00e]?) is the first female student council president at Seika High and known for her extremely demanding and aggressive attitude towards boys. She relentlessly attempts to reform them to live up to what she considers are acceptable standards of behavior. Though many of the male students fear and even hate her, the ones who get to know her come to see that she's actually very fair and willing to help anyone who needs it.

She eventually becomes widely respected for her exceptional academic ability, her great athletic skill, and her many accomplishments as president. Her negative attitude towards males is mostly attributed to her father amassing a huge debt and then disappearing. Misaki became determined to make sure her spacey and helpless mother, Minako (美奈子[color:5ec6=#00e]?) would not have to work so hard to support both Misaki and her younger sister, Suzuna (紗奈[color:5ec6=#00e]?). To this extent, she secretly, and at first reluctantly, works as a maid-waitress at Café Maid Latte. Misaki is always driven to do her best regardless of the endeavor, and has a strong sense of justice, though she also has a tendency to forget her own well being in the process of helping others. Misaki harbours feelings towards Usui and often blushes when he's around her. She recently turned seventeen. She always says that she hates Usui, but it usually means she loves him. Eventually, she realizes her feelings for Usui who in fact already knows. She is never honest about her feelings towards Usui, instead lying and acting violently whenever awkward moments are brought up. In Chapter 51, she attempts to confess her feelings to Usui, but is interrupted by Usui who apologizes and asks her to wait just a bit longer. As of Chapter 57, Misaki finally confesses her feelings to Usui and they officially begin dating.
Takumi Usui

Voiced by: Nobuhiko Okamoto (Anime), Tomokazu Sugita (Drama CD)

One of the most popular boys at Seika High, Takumi Usui (碓氷 拓海, Usui Takumi[color:5ec6=#00e]?) is a 17 year old boy who appears to take little interest in anything and prefers to observe things as they unfold. He proves to be extraordinarily talented in a number of different fields, including cooking, the violin, chess, and table etiquette.

He's in fact an illegitimate child; his rich English mother (whose maiden name is Usui) had an affair with an unknown Japanese man. She died giving birth to Takumi. To keep this fact secret, his English grandfather sent him to his grandmother's family in Japan, thus having little contact with his older British half-brother and family. He was adopted by his mother's cousin. Most of the education he received was through tutoring, partially explaining his academic excellence.

After becoming bored with isolation, Usui decided to attend a standard high school (which was chosen randomly from a book with his eyes closed). He moved to a high-rise condo to attend Seika High. During his first year at Seika, he quickly became popular among the girls, but not being interested in them, he systematically rejected them whenever they confessed to him. At the beginning of his second year, he develops an interest in Misaki and learns her secret. He regularly tells Misaki he likes her, but she dismisses his behavior simply as a joke or harassment. It is because of this habit, along with his uncanny ability to appear whenever Misaki needs him, his diverse and unusual skills, and the fact that he survived jumping off the school's roof into the swimming pool that Misaki often refers to him as a "perverted outer-space human". Regardless, he continually helps and watches over her, offering insightful advice on how to deal with the boys at Seika effectively and even becomes possessive of her (especially around Shintani Hinata). At one point, he tells Kanou that he doesn't want to date a girl seriously, but later on, Kanou realises that dating and deeply caring for someone are two different things to Usui. Usui truly cares and loves Misaki but he is waiting for the right time for them to be together and officially date each other. In Chapter 51, he interrupts her confession with a kiss, asking her to wait just a little bit longer until the time is right. In Chapter 57, Usui and Misaki begin dating.
Secondary characters
Seika High School

Hinata Shintani (深谷 陽向, Shintani Hinata[color:5ec6=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Atsushi Abe
Misaki's childhood friend who came to Seika High in search of his first love. His first appearance was in chapter 26 were it was also revealed that Misaki was in fact his first love, however this love was one sided. When they were children, he was an overweight boy who Misaki helped back to his feet when he fell from a tree. He fell in love with her, but soon moved away to live with his grandfather in the countryside when his parents died. When he returned, his appearance changed considerably from losing so much weight (supposedly from eating nothing but vegetables), though he remains a glutton. He is also one of the few people who know about Misaki's part time job, he loves Misaki very much, and hates Usui (because they are rival of Misaki's love).

He admires Usui's strength and talent, though Usui seems indifferent to Shintani. Despite this there are times when Usui does see him as a threat when it comes to Misaki and this rivalry is shown as two feuding dogs about to face off against each other. He refuses to give up on Misaki despite being fully aware of her and Usui's feelings for each other, having resolved prior to moving that he would not let Misaki having a boyfriend deter him. Misaki's mother and sister both note that he physically resembles Misaki's father, reacting to this he claims that he would never abandon the people he cares about.

Shouichirou Yukimura (幸村 祥一郎, Yukimura Shōichirō[color:5ec6=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Hiro Shimono (drama CD), Kazuyoshi Shiibashi (anime)[1]
The Vice President of the Student Council, Shouichirou Yukimura (幸村 祥一郎, Yukimura Shōichirō[color:5ec6=#00e]?) tries to help Misaki where he can, and enjoys office routine. At first, he, like the rest of the student council, is fearful of Misaki, but he eventually comes to be on fairly close terms with her and Usui.

Yukimura is hard-working, earnest, and capable of doing most administrative work, but is not athletic to any extent, especially in comparison to Misaki and Usui. His gentle, almost feminine demeanor and slight stature make him appear somewhat weak, a fact he is sensitive about. He's both terrified and awed of Usui, after Usui kisses him as a "reward for his hardwork" and Usui claims that he liked it (a ruse to restore Misaki's confidence). Yukimura has a seven-year-old sister named Ruri. She appears in episode 20, showing that Yukimura is a caring older brother who is not very prince-like (according to Ruri).

Naoya Shirakawa (白川 直也, Shirakawa Naoya[color:5ec6=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Hiroyuki Yoshino (drama CD), Mitsuhiro Ichiki (anime)[1]
A male student at Seika High School who initially dislikes Misaki because of her forceful methods of reforming Seika. He and his friends discover that she works at a maid café early on in the story, but after she is defended by Usui, they quickly become her biggest fans, as well as regulars at Cafe Maid Latte, often referred to as the "idiot trio." His nickname is “Shiroyan.”He also used to be a delinquent in middle school known as White Demon.
Ikuto Sarashina (更科 郁斗, Sarashina Ikuto[color:5ec6=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Tetsuya Kakihara (drama CD), Takuma Terashima (anime)[1]
The second of the “idiot trio,” which includes Shirakawa Naoya and Ryuunosuke Kurosaki. A closet otaku, he is actually good at drawing manga illustrations and enjoys writing. His friends call him “Ikkun.”

Ryuunosuke Kurosaki (黒崎 龍之介, Kurosaki Ryūnosuke[color:5ec6=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Yūichi Nakamura (drama CD), Yoshimasa Hosoya (anime)[1]

Sakura Hanazono (花園 さくら, Hanazono Sakura[color:5ec6=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa [1]
A good friend of Misaki's and one of the few female students at Seika High, Sakura is friendly and cheerful and, like the rest of the girls, relies on Misaki for protection from the wild behaviour of the boys. She is quite popular amongst the boys, but frequently rejects their confessions; in particular, she’s rejected ex-rugby captain Masaru Gouda (剛田将, Gōda Masaru[color:5ec6=#00e]?) one hundred times. According to Shizuko, Sakura falls in love without carefully considering what the person is really like, as exampled by her persistent feelings for Kuuga, the two-faced, womanizing singer of the popular rock band UxMishi from a nearby high school.

Shizuko Kaga (加賀 しず子, Kaga Shizuko[color:5ec6=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Yū Kobayashi [1]
One of Misaki and Sakura’s friends, a sensible and intelligent girl who often spends lunchtime with them. She is quite the opposite of Sakura. Shizuko is a member of the flower arranging club and is good at math, but isn’t very good at physical activities. She has an older brother in university and a younger sister in junior high school; according to Sakura, the three of them look very alike.

Soutarou Kanou (叶 爽太郎, Kanō Sōtarō[color:5ec6=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Kosuke Toriumi
A withdrawn male student who is initially against Misaki as the student council president because of her aspirations of increasing the female population of Seika High. In order to sabotage her presidency, Kanou tries to hypnotize Misaki, Usui, and the student council into ruining Misaki’s reputation. It is revealed that his gynophobic attitude comes from his mother abandoning his family when he was young (ironically the very opposite of what Misaki experienced) and his father warning him to be wary of women, and after failing to hypnotize Misaki, she punishes him by assigning him to work closely with his female classmates during the school's cultural festival, in hopes of forcing him to get over his fear. The punishment is ultimately successful, and he slowly becomes friendlier with Misaki and the rest of his female peers, as well as with Yukimura (who gives off the aura of a female, as Kanou states).

Though he runs against Misaki during her re-election as President, he opposes using underhanded means to gain victory, remaining on good terms with her. He also knows about the relationship between Usui and Misaki and often wonders why they won't admit that they like each other.

Maria Miyazono (宮園 マリア, Miyazono Maria[color:5ec6=#00e]?)
A young and attractive English teacher at Seika High. She may have non-Japanese ancestry because of her name and the comments on her looks. She's an acquaintance of Tora Igarashi who made her join Seika High, in order to make Usui quit. Wearing revealing clothes as well as having a large bust and being very short, she attracts the attention of male teachers and students. Misaki instinctively protects her from them, causing Maria to fall in love with her. Initially thought of by Misaki as a potential rival for Usui, Maria confesses her love to Misaki.

Usui is in fact a former student of Maria's mother. She has a 'habit' of falling in love with girls. She has a fiance, Shinji, but she only considers him as a mere childhood friend. She also knows about Misaki's part time job. She's Igarashi's right hand person to make Usui move to Miyabigaoka High School.
Ayuzawa House

Minako Ayuzawa (鮎沢 美奈子, Ayuzawa Minako[color:5ec6=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Ayako Kawasumi
Misaki's mother. She appears to be somewhat sickly, but does her best to support Misaki and Suzuna by working as a nurse at the hospital. Although she is grateful that Misaki is helping her with their financial problems, she also wants nothing more than for Misaki to have more fun and go out more often as a high school teenager. She becomes acquainted with Usui at the train station in chapter 35 and sees him as a very gentle person and the exact opposite of her husband. Usui has stated that she is open minded.

Suzuna Ayuzawa (鮎沢 紗奈, Ayuzawa Suzuna[color:5ec6=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Kaori Ishihara
Misaki's younger sister. She is very apathetic and shows little to no emotion. She does not work at any part time jobs and appears to be in middle school. In the anime, she often enters magazine contests and always seems to win food prizes. Her first appearance occurs late in the manga, while she is a frequent recurring character in the anime.
Maid Latte

Satsuki (さつき[color:5ec6=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Rie Tanaka (drama CD), Aki Toyosaki (anime)[1]
The manager of Café Latte and Misaki’s boss; a 30-year-old woman who has a tendency to voice out her fantasies. She is a cheerful woman who enjoys her job because it allows her to make others happy. She is very understanding of Misaki’s circumstances, knowing that Misaki does not particularly enjoy working at a maid café, and is perceptive of other people’s feelings. Satsuki also ends up hiring Usui as a part-time cook, much to Misaki’s chagrin.

Honoka (ほのか[color:5ec6=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Kana Asumi [1]
An employee at Café Latte. She can become somewhat maniacal about getting in character for her job and criticizes Misaki for her initial resistance to acting parts outside of her comfort range, as well as for being ashamed of working at Maid Latte and hiding it from her peers. Also when Honoka was asked to describe what she feels and thinks about Misa she says "hate, because her good work is making her look bad."

Erika (エリカ[color:5ec6=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Mariya Ise [1]
A college student working at Café Latte. She notes that Misaki is strong and picks up work quickly, and claims that it doesn't feel like Misaki is younger than her. She has a tendency to eavesdrop and is described as having a “voice fetish.”

Subaru (すばる[color:5ec6=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Kana Ueda [1]
An employee at Café Latte. Like Honoka, she does not have a full-time job and makes a living from part-time work. She considers Misaki to be hard working. Subaru can be distinguished by her glasses.

Sayu (さゆ[color:5ec6=#00e]?) and Gon-chan (ゴンちゃん[color:5ec6=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Harumi Sakurai and Yuko Gibu
Two other employees at Café Latte. Sayu is 18 and Gon-chan is 20 years old. They do not appear often.

Sen and Mochi
The two kitchen staff at Café Latte. Both girls made their appearance in episode 15.

Aoi Hyoudou (兵藤 葵, Hyōdō Aoi[color:5ec6=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Yuki Kaida (drama CD), Hiromi Igarashi (anime)[1]
Satsuki’s nephew, the son of Satsuki's older brother, and a junior high school student who enjoys dressing like a girl. Likes "cute things", and being the center of attention. His androgynous features allow him to pass off as a girl and his female persona is well-known as a cute internet idol. Aoi enjoys toying with the feelings of men, but is eventually exposed as a boy by Misaki. He is generally short-tempered and has little patience. He becomes embarrassed after doing something kind or showing affection for someone; then suddenly becomes angry (he can't show his true feelings very well). Misaki is under the impression that he hates her; he frequently scolds her for her poor fashion sense and unfeminine strength. Even so, it seems he has some sort of interest in her. He later yells at Misaki for not being more decisive about her relationship with Usui, and for leading Shintani on, even if she was doing it unintentionally. It's this scolding that eventually pushes her admit to Shintani (and probably for the first time, clearly, to herself) that she does in fact have feelings for Usui. He later realizes that he likes Misaki. It is also revealed in episode 17 of the manga when Aoi pulls Misaki towards him, indeed proving his hidden affections.

Nagisa Hyoudou (兵藤 なぎさ, Hyōdō Nagisa[color:5ec6=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Sanae Kobayashi
Satsuki’s younger sister and Aoi's aunt. Nagisa is the manager of a beach house known as “Ocean House.” She asks for Satsuki and her employees to come and work at her beach house during the summer since her shop is not as popular as she would like. Nagisa is somewhat tough on Aoi for trying to dress like a girl because her older brother sent Aoi to her beach house to become more masculine.
UxMishi

Kuuga Sakurai
Voiced by: Kenji Nojima
Vocalist of the rock band UxMishi. While he seems sweet and kind to his fans but in reality he is very arrogant, rude and insensitive to others feelings. It is due to his attitude that Misaki dislikes him as he was very insensitive to Sakura's feelings while hitting on Misaki herself. Later on, he seems to change and has gained feelings for Sakura because she's the only one who earnestly cares for him. He shows that he has feelings for Sakura when he is acting jealously toward Usui and being annoyed by the fact that Sakura is happy being with Usui and Misaki. He also said that he'd be long gone if it wasn't for her.

Shou
Voiced by: Yuuki Ono
Guitarist of the rock band UxMishi. Shou doesn't express himself that much.

Kou
Voiced by: Kazuyuki Okitsu
Bassist of the rock band UxMishi. Kou is very respectful and always scolds Kuuga's rude behavior.

William Adam Yuuji
Voiced by: Hideki Nakanishi
Drummer of the rock band UxMishi. Miyabigaoka High School

Tora Igarashi (五十嵐 虎, Igarashi Tora[color:5ec6=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Kenichi Suzumura [1]
The Student Council President at Miyabigaoka High School, he initially appears as a gentleman who marvels at Misaki and the changes she has brought to Seika High, offering her a chance to come to Miyabigaoka with an exceptional loan. He is quickly revealed to be a lecherous young man who has become bored with the women surrounding him, who are easily submissive because of his wealth. He enjoys causing drama around him and he thinks that money can buy anything. Misaki's strong will and outright rejection of his monetary bribe to have her join the Miyabigaoka Student Council captures his interest. It is later revealed that Tora has some ties to or knowledge of Usui's past or background, which he may be exploiting to some as of yet unknown end. We can say that Igarashi Tora is the antagonist of the anime and manga.
He also knows about the relationship toward Misaki and Usui. He often says or does things that render Misaki speechless. He said that he has feelings towards Misaki, but it was just bait so he could tell her that Usui is richer than him. He confuses Misaki with his manipulative way of speaking.

Kanade Maki (真木 奏, Maki Kanade[color:5ec6=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Tomoaki Maeno
The Vice President of the Student Council at Miyabigaoka High, he and Igarashi attempt to buy out Maid Latte and change it into a butler café. Misaki and Usui are able to prevent him from realizing his plans through a competition. In the end, he realizes that Maid Latte is different from other cafés.

Hirofumi Koganei (小金井博文, Koganei Hirofumi[color:5ec6=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Fumihiro Okabayashi
A bespectacled student at Miyabigaoka High School who looks down upon Seika students. After insulting two students for taking an interest in chess, they hit him and Misaki forces them to go with her to apologize to him. When she discovers the reason why they attacked Koganei, she demands that Koganei apologize to her students as well. He agrees, only on the condition that they defeat him in chess, which Usui does with no trouble despite Koganei ranking fourth in the nation as a chess player. He was originally intended to be the president of Miyabigaoka High School Council by the author, but rejected by the editor.[2] Seisen Middle School

Gouki Aratake (荒嶽 剛毅, Aratake Gōki[color:5ec6=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Tetsuya Kakihara
The strongest delinquent in Seisen Middle School, he is an old friend and kohai of Shirokawa and Kurosaki. He used to be a pushover and a bit of a crybaby. He was saved by Shirokawa and Kurosaki once when he was being bullied, and immediately started looking up to them after that. Constantly seeking to become stronger, he kept his delinquent ways even after the two have graduated and retired from delinquency. He later kidnapped Yukimura, who was dressed like a girl and who he mistook as Shirokawa's girlfriend, and challenged the idiot trio to a fight elsewhere.
It also happens that he and Aoi apparently go to the same middle school.
Other

Gerard Walker
He is Takumi's older half-brother. He appears to be a successful businessman who also smokes. He seems to want to learn more about Takumi's activities in Japan as he had his bodyguard spy on him.
He and Takumi appear to be on bad terms, most probably due to the fact that Takumi is the illegitimate child of Gerard's mother. He seems to be the complete opposite of Usui, unskilled at cooking and just about every other perfect thing Usui does. Even though they don't have the same father, they really do look very similar; the only noticeable difference being their personalities and hair color. He first appears in page 30 of chapter 50 in the manga.
Ruri Yukimura

She is Yukimura's younger sister. Her first appearance in the anime is episode 20. Once she sees Usui she immediately calls him her "ouji-sama" (prince). After a date in which Misaki devises several 'methods' in order to get Yukimura to look more prince-like, Ruri decides that Takumi-sama's 'princess' is not her. At first, Ruri disliked telling people that Yukimura was her brother (which made Yukimura very upset), but she eventually sees the 'prince' in him and she and Yukimura get on good terms again.
Cedric (Morris Family)

Gerard's bodyguard. Quick and amazing like Usui. Considered cute at Maid Latte. In chapter 53, it was revealed that he despised Misaki and that if she didn't want to get hurt, she will leave Usui/the Walker family alone. Part of his dislike associates with his idea of how butlers and maids are supposed to be like (dedicated servants to distinguished people) and dislikes pseudo-maids as a result, though he understands Misaki's situation over her family. However, he feels that someone like Misaki is not suited for someone like Usui. In Chapter 54, he was taken aback, because he sees the resemblance on how Gerard treats him as Usui treats Misaki. He constantly spies on Misaki and Usui though not very conspicuously as people around Usui and Misaki, as well as Usui and Misaki themselves, can see him.

Munto

Munto is a two-episode original video animation (OVA) project by Kyoto Animation, first released in 2003 titled Munto followed by a 2005 sequel Munto 2: Beyond the Walls of Time. An animated television series entitled Sora o Miageru Shōjo no Hitomi ni Utsuru Sekai based on the OVAs was produced by Kyoto Animation and directed by Yoshiji Kigami. The TV series is a nine-episode continuation of the OVAs, and aired in Japan between January and March 2009 on Chiba TV. The TV series includes an updated director's cut of the OVA episodes with new animation and footage. A manga adaptation of the TV series illustrated by Makoto 2-gō began serialization in the May 2009 issue of Kadokawa Shoten's Comp Ace magazine.[1] An animated film named Tenjōbito to Akutobito Saigo no Tatakai was released on April 18, 2009.[2]

Plot
In the distant past of Munto when the world of the Heavens did not exist, humans lived a prosperous civilization. One day, beings of unknown origins fell out of the sky and onto human world. These beings could control a power called Akuto, or human emotions. They could take the human spirit, which is an accretion of feelings, wishes and dreams and turn that into a physical power or physical object. These beings, obsessed with their powers, destroyed the human civilization within a few days. However, they did not realize that the humans created the Akuto; these beings who descended from the skies killed off the very source of their power. They then discovered several alternate universes which they could draw more Akuto from. They depleted all the other dimensions of Akuto and used it to create their own empire in the skies above the humans. This new civilization was known as the Heavens and was populated by the Heavenly Beings who could control Akuto.
The leaders of the Heavens soon grew corrupt due to the unlimited amount of Akuto they had stolen from other planets in other space times, and the Heavens began to collapse into disarray. At this time, the humans launched an attack against the Heavens. They were the very humans that were defeated when the Heavenly Beings first showed up. The humans who supplied the Akuto then defeated the Heavenly Beings. During the battle, the leaders of the Heavens decided to sever the supply of Akuto, cutting themselves away from Earth rather than be killed by the rebelling humans. They sealed themselves into a parallel dimension in order to sever the link of Akuto, though this resulted in the pillars that connected Earth to the Heavens to fall from the sky causing massive destruction. This day was called the "Calamitous Day" when both worlds lost contact with each other. From that day on, the Heavenly Beings considered linking the two dimensions together to be a taboo and appointed a guardian to guard this link to make sure it is never connected again.
In the present day, the Heavens are in disarray due to the lack of Akuto flowing into the Heavens. The Heavens, divided into kingdoms, battle each other. The Magical Kingdom is blamed for using the Akuto the most and the other kingdoms seek to destroy the Magical Kingdom in hopes of preserving what little is left of the Akuto. Should the Heavens be destroyed due to a lack of Akuto, the floating islands in the sky will fall to the Earth and the Heavens and human civilization will perish. The Magical Kingdom is led by their king Munto who believes the only way to save the Heavens from destruction is to seek out Yumemi Hidaka who holds the key to restoring the Akuto to the Heavens.

Characters
Terrestrial characters

Yumemi Hidaka (日高 ユメミ, Hidaka Yumemi[color:d1e5=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Haruna Mima (OVA), Mai Aizawa (TV)
Yumemi is the main character of the story, and the only person who can see the "floating islands in the sky". She is afraid of her ability because it makes her different from others, and has learned the hard way that most people don't believe what she sees. Because of this, she keeps her gift to herself, carrying a pink umbrella to block out the view of the sky. She is a dreamy, quiet, gentle person, with a caring and compassionate personality. Throughout the second OVA, she becomes more confident of who she is, but is still insecure about what she sees because of her special connection with Munto. Because of the connection, she is constantly haunted by images of Munto's past and is confused and distressed as to why she sees them. In the second OVA, Yumemi takes the initiative and becomes more accepting of her gift and role. She is the one to offer her help to Munto in the second OVA. As she grows in age she soon develops feelings for Munto as seen when she blushes and wears his red cape in the ending credits of the second OVA.

Ichiko Ono (小野 以知子, Ono Ichiko[sup][color:d1e5=#00e]?
)
Voiced by: Kayoko Satoi (OVA), Chika Horikawa (TV)
Yumemi's classmate and childhood friend. Ichiko is a very positive and energetic person. She always encourages Yumemi whenever she feels gloomy and is very protective of her. However, she also seems to have co-dependent tendencies and can be overly controlling due to her own insecurities. She had always wanted to see the islands in the sky Yumemi spoke of, and quietly wished for the day that she would see them. It is revealed that Yumemi begins to carry the umbrella as a result of an outburst of Ichiko when they were younger. Ichiko is especially worried whenever Yumemi's gaze returned to the skies after the first OVA, afraid that the "red man" was going to take Yumemi away somewhere that she could not protect her anymore. She constantly tries to convince Yumemi that Munto and the islands in the sky were a place that they don't belong to. Ichiko's character is shown to be popular and athletic at school, whereas her friends Yumemi and Suzume are called "space-cadet" and "childish".

Suzume Imamura (今村 涼芽, Inamura Suzume[color:d1e5=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Ayano Sasaki (OVA), Hiromi Konno (TV)
She is also Yumemi's classmate and childhood friend. She is a very optimistic and cheerful girl who lives at her own pace. She has a rather immature and childish personality, but is always smiling. Though she is a girl with a very soft-spoken nature and childish at that, she often surprises others by her wise words and "outsider-looking-in" view. She is more understanding when Yumemi claims she must go to Munto to help in the second OVA, and helps convince Ichiko that everything was going to be alright. She has a boyfriend named Kazuya who she loves dearly and "marries".
Kazuya Takamori (高森 和也, Takamori Kazuya[color:d1e5=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Shōgo Matsui (OVA), Shinya Takahashi (TV)
Suzume's boyfriend. A strong boy born to distant parents, Kazuya became a delinquent and a loner to such an extent that, feeling useless, he contemplated suicide. In an attempt to drown himself, Suzume stops him and helps Kazuya learn to appreciate life. He then determines to live strongly. He deeply cares for Suzume and spends lots of time with her; the always cheery personality that is sometimes found annoying by her peers is what he likes most about her. He "marries" Suzume by crossing a river with her, symbolizing their willingness to face any obstacles in the way of their relationship. It is revealed later that Kazuya is the top student in his grade (as well as best-looking) and was accepted into a prestigious school.

Takashi Tobe
Voiced by: Hiro Shimono (OVA), Kaoru Mizuhara (TV)
A classmate of Yumemi, Ichiko and Suzume, Takashi makes his debut in the second OVA. He is a very bright student with a realistic, dependable, but "fence-sitter" personality. Because he often listens to Ichiko and is shown to admire her on many levels, it is implied that he has a crush on her, but Ichiko herself shows no signs of noticing this. His parents' house is a shrine and Yumemi, Ichiko, and Suzume take a part-time job there as shrine maidens during the second OVA.
Celestial characters

Munto (ムント[color:d1e5=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Mazakazu Higo (OVA), Daisuke Ono (TV)
Ruler of the Magical Kingdom (one of several kingdoms in the sky). He deliberately falls to the dangerous Lower World in a desperate bid to contact Yumemi and save his people and the heavenly world. He is proud and stubborn to a fault, but also strong, courageous and caring. In the second OVA, like Yumemi who sees his past, he sees hers in exchange, though unwillingly and subconsciously. It is implied that he has feelings for Yumemi as he tells her that she is the only one he wants to protect this is because he grows closer to her every time he is thinking about or with her. this sense causes him to be even more hesitant to reach out for her help, and afraid that if he does, she would disappear in an instant, a theory that terrifies him so. It is Munto this time, who is hesitating and unwilling to ask for help. In an extra at the end, he comes back to see Yumemi as Lady Ryueri states that he is making some preparations of his own.

Ryuely (リュエリ, Ryueri[color:d1e5=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Norie Sawai (OVA), Ryōko Tanaka (TV)
A prophetess under Munto's supervision who has the gift of foresight. She sacrifices her own vision to help Munto find the way to restore Akuto and monitors his journey from the Heavens. Calm and collected, she is a motherly figure, especially to the young Toche. She has great faith and respect for Munto, and willingly gave up her eyesight for him, showing no regrets for doing so, although she regained it by the end of the first OVA.

Gass (ガス, Gasu[color:d1e5=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Yoshinori Shima (OVA), Tetsu Inada (TV)
The enigmatic guardian of time, Gass is described as an "Outsider", which may explain his and Irita's Arabic-themed clothing. Despite the dangers of overstepping his role, he allows Munto to slip through a hole in time to find Yumemi. In the second OVA, because Gass allowed Munto to pass through time, his body slowly begins to rot away. This is because of he neglected the role as a guardian of Time during the first crisis, but he is shown to accept this and continues to battle against the opposing forces against the Magical Kingdom. He seems to have given his powers to Munto when he punched him in the stomach, sending him hurtling down to Earth in the second OVA, because he left a mark similar to the ones that appear when he conjures his powers. Gass is a strong-willed person but can be compassionate, as seen with Irita.

Irita
Voiced by: Ayano Sasaki (OVA), Maki Tsuchiya (TV)
A small, imp-like girl who is constantly seen with Gass. She is shown to care for him deeply and treats him with the utmost respect and trust, crying out in fear when he is hurt. Gass also seems to care for Irita, diving into space to catch her when she is falling. Her personality is mischievous and spunky.

Gntarl (グンタール, Guntāru[color:d1e5=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Kōchi Kawashima (OVA), Norio Wakamoto (TV)
"Gntarl" is a corruption of the German name "Gunther," and the name is subbed as "Gunther" in the Munto OVA. He answers to the Elders of the Heavens, and is in command of the united armies. He is a cunning and dangerous person who hungers for power. He is the one who directs the attacks against Munto's Magical Kingdom in an attempt to seize control. It was shown in the second OVA that he had been keeping close watch over Yumemi in the Lower World, and that he too seeks her power.

7 heads
The leaders of each Heavenly country. They unite an army with Gntarl against the Magical Kingdom.
Leica
Voiced by: Sonoko Kawata (OVA), Fuko Saito (TV)
A general of one of the Heavenly World's countries. She makes her appearance in both the first and second OVAs; she is shown to be battling fiercely against Gass while Munto is at Earth in the first OVA, but in the second one she seems to have developed respect for Gass and battles with him instead. A strong warrior and determined at what she does, Leica is also shown to be a fair leader in battle, her subordinates respecting her orders and carrying them out.

Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne

Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne (神風怪盗ジャンヌ, Kamikaze Kaitō Jannu[color:eb9e=#00e]?
, also known as Phantom-Thief Jeanne,) is a fantasy shōjo manga series written and illustrated by Arina Tanemura. The story is about the adventures of a high school girl, Maron Kusakabe, who is the reincarnation of Jeanne D'Arc and transforms into a magical girl kaito—phantom thief— to collect the scattered pieces of God's power which are also coveted by demons hiding in beautiful art works.[1]
The manga was published by Shueisha in Ribon between February 1998 and July 2000. The individual chapters were collected and published in seven tankōbon volumes. It is licensed for English-language release by CMX Manga. The series was adapted by Toei Animation as a 44-episode anime television series that was broadcast on TV Asahi from February 1999 to January 2000. The series was re-issued by Shueisha in 2007, with all chapters fitting into only 6 volumes, instead of the original 7; all volumes had new covers.

Plot
Adaptation

The manga relates in detail Finn Fish's background, expounding on Fin's relationships with other angels and the events that led to her becoming Maron's partner. This backstory of the angels is not shown in the anime.

Main characters

Maron Kusakabe (日下部 まろん, Kusakabe Maron[color:eb9e=#00e]?)
The protagonist of the series, Maron is a 16-year-old high school girl and rhythmic gymnast, who can also transform into the supernatural "Kaito Jeanne" (怪盗 ジャンヌ, Kaitō Jannu[color:eb9e=#00e]?). Maron lives in an apartment alone—having been left by her parents, who work separate jobs abroad. She is well-liked at school, especially in chapter 11, when lots of guys from her school offer to escort her home on Valentine’s Day, and request chocolate valentines from her. Even so, Maron is a lonely young woman who hides her feelings behind a warm smile. Even though she has her parent's phone number and address, she is afraid she would once again be "thrown away" by her parents, and thus refuses to contact them. The only time she is contacted by her parents is by her mother, in order to tell her they are divorcing. Maron is very close with her best friend Miyako, though she still holds her at a distance. In the beginning, she sees Chiaki as merely a playboy, and refuses to trust him as he had always seemed to be hitting on her. However, after the incident when Maron was told of her parents’ divorce, Chiaki found Maron alone in tears, and he encouraged her to believe in herself. This was a turning point for Maron: Chiaki’s kindness helped her trust others, and it also sparked romantic feelings toward Chiaki.

Before the series began, Maron had encountered a tiny female angel named Finn Fish, who gave her a mission from God to seal away demons. These demons attempt to steal the beauty in human hearts, in order to increase The Devil's powers. Maron was given a mystical rosary with a large crucifix, by which she could transform into Kaito Jeanne, the reincarnation of Jeanne D'Arc, who then captures the demons. Jeanne has some different physical features from Maron, and also possesses certain supernatural powers. In the anime television series, Maron is voiced by Houko Kuwashima.

Chiaki Nagoya (名古屋 稚空, Nagoya Chiaki[color:eb9e=#00e]?)
Chiaki is a guy student at Maron's school, who can transform into "Kaito Sinbad" (怪盗 シンドバッド, Kaitō Shindobaddo[color:eb9e=#00e]?), Jeanne's rival, who also collects demons' powers. Maron doesn't realize Sinbad is really Chiaki, but he already knows of her double-identity. At the very beginning of the series, Chiaki moves into Maron's and Miyako's building and transfers to their class, in order to get close to Maron, to stop her from collecting the demons. At first, Chiaki is portrayed as a playboy, whom Maron despises. However, as time passes, he falls in love with her, and he's able to gain Maron's trust, and eventually love, by helping her out of tough situations, and helping her regain her courage--both as Chiaki and as Sinbad. After Chiaki catches Maron staring sadly at her empty mailbox, he begins dropping her "useless" notes, as one of Chiaki's many ways of trying to cheer her. Like Maron, Chiaki lives alone, having run away because he was tired of his father's continuing to marry new women after his mother's death. He later reconciles with his father, after introducing him to Maron.

Chiaki, too, is accompanied by a small male angel, Access Time, who gave him the power to become Kaito Sinbad. It is eventually revealed that Chiaki had been attempting to stop Maron, because he knew of Finn's being an agent for The Devil, rather than for God, and was using Maron to help him. He had wanted to seduce her in order to make her stop, but he began to find himself blushing each time Maron smiled to him, which he tried to lie to himself by telling himself that it is just "false affection" (in the manga), or that he was being moody (in the anime). After Maron discovers he was also Kaito Sinbad, and that he was just trying to seduce her to make her stop being a Kaitou, he realizes his affection for her, and fights to regain her trust. In the final chapter of the manga, Chiaki indicated he was jealous of God, when he said he would "always be watching over Maron." In the anime television series, Chiaki is voiced by Susumu Chiba.

Finn Fish (フィン·フィッシュ, Fin Fisshu[color:eb9e=#00e]?)
Finn Fish is the small female semi-angel who helps Maron detect demons, and gave her the power to transform into Kaito Jeanne. As the series progresses, it is revealed that Finn is a fallen angel who was banished from heaven and sentenced to death after killing a human. The Devil saved her from annihilation in return for her to become his servant, and so she manipulates Maron into gathering the chess pieces for The Devil. Later, Finn explains that she really wanted to live so she could see Access again, because she had always loved him. During the final battle with The Devil, Finn realizes her wrongs and sacrifices herself to save Maron. In the manga epilogue, years later, she is reincarnated as Natsuki, the daughter of Chiaki and Maron. In the anime, Finn was kidnapped and brainwashed by The Devil, and did not realize she was working for him until all of the demons were collected. In the anime television series, Finn is voiced by Kumiko Nishihara.

Access Time (アクセス·タイム, Akusesu Taimu[color:eb9e=#00e]?)
Access Time is the small male dark angel who helps Chiaki detect demons, and who gave Chiaki the power to transform into Kaitō Sinbad. He is in love with Finn Fish, and worked hard to become a full angel so he could be with her. When Finn is killed by The Devil, Access gives Finn his black earring as a memento, so that the two would meet again when she reincarnated as a human. He himself becomes a semi-angel and also dies. He is reborn as Shinji, the son of Miyako and Yamato. When Shinji is four years old, he recognizes Natsuki as the reincarnation of Finn by the earring she was holding after she was born, and proposes to her on the spot. In the anime television series, Access is voiced by Akiko Yajima.
Supporting characters

Miyako Todaiji (東大寺 都, Tōdaiji Miyako[color:eb9e=#00e]?)
Miyako is Maron's classmate and best friend since childhood, who lives across the hall from Maron's apartment. Miyako's father is a police detective and, desiring to follow in his footsteps, Miyako frequently aids in trying to catch Jeanne. Stubborn and with a fierce temper, Miyako notes during the series that even with her Maron is sometimes distant and that it bothers her. Miyako is initially in love with Chiaki, and is jealous of Maron, but later accepts Maron's and Chiaki's growing relationship. When Yamato confesses to her, Miyako thinks he's only joking, as Yamato had long been in love with Maron. He eventually convinces her of his sincerity and at the end of the series Miyako and Yamato marry, and have a son named Shinji. Eventually, Miyako reveals that she knew that Maron was Jeanne the whole time, and that she only tried to catch Jeanne so she could release her if she were caught. In the anime adaptation, Miyako is unaware that Maron is Jeanne and is deeply hurt when Maron is forced to transform in front of her. The pain allows Finn to use Miyako to attack Maron, but Maron is eventually able to wake her up. In the anime television series, Miyako is voiced by Naoko Matsui.

Yamato Minazuki (水無月 大和, Minazuki Yamato[color:eb9e=#00e]?)
Yamato is a classmate of Maron, Chiaki, and Miyako, and is the class president. Because of his gentle, unassuming nature, he doesn't get much respect. He initially has a crush on Maron, but later gives up on her and comes to fall in love with Miyako while joining her in trying to catch Sinbad. When he confesses his feelings, Miyako angrily pushes him in a lake, thinking he is toying with her. Eventually he is able to convince her that his feelings are genuine, and at the end of the series they are married with a son. In the anime adaptation, Yamato is depicted as being so innocent and pure of heart that he is particularly susceptible to demon possession. In the anime television series, Yamato is voiced by Naozumi Takahashi.

Noin Claude
Noin is a demon who disguises himself as history teacher Hijiri Shikaido at Maron's school. Five hundred years ago, he was a knight who assisted the original Jeanne d'Arc and was in love with her. Unable to protect Jeanne d'Arc from death, he gave his soul to The Devil, and vowed to fall in love with Jeanne's reincarnated form. After he confirms Maron is Jeanne's reincarnation, he does fall in love with her and tries to interfere with her collecting, culminating in his attempting to rape her as she can only transform while she is still a virgin. When Maron travels back in time to meet Jeanne d'Arc during her final hours, Noin goes with her and regrets what he had done. In the anime adaptation, he dies protecting Maron, and is reunited with Jeanne d'Arc. In the anime television series, Noin is voiced by Kappei Yamaguchi.
Anime Plot
16-year-old high-school gymnast Maron Kusakabe is visited by the angel Finn Fish, who gives her a task. God's power is scattered across the Earth, and if He does not gather enough by the turn of the millennium, He will die. To block Him, The Devil had sent out agents to gather His power, which is the beauty in human hearts, in the form of chess pieces. With Finn's assistance, Maron transforms into the reincarnation of Jeanne D'Arc in order to hunt Demons hidden within works of art. When Maron defeats a Demon, the artwork disappears, and to the outside world it is as if she has stolen it, and she becomes known as a kaitō ("phantom-thief"). Maron's best friend is Miyako, the daughter of a police detective in charge of Jeanne's case.
As the series progresses, Maron and Miyako fall in love with new classmate Chiaki, who wants to stop Maron collecting the chess pieces, for he knew that Fin Fish is the Da-Tenshi (Fallen Angel), but apparently in the form of normal angel. Chiaki at first "fakes" falling in love to get closer to Maron, knowing Maron is Jeanne. Later he falls in love truthfully after realising that Maron is worth the effort, even if she does "hate" him. Maron, on the other hand, is confused and does not know what "love" means because her parents abandoned her when she was around ten years old because they were having problems getting along, so no one taught her. As a result, she does not know how to respond to Chiaki's advances. When Maron collects the pawns, (the chess pieces) Fin says that Maron's mission is ended and gives her a angel feather. But even though Fin said that demons won't be appearing on earth, Noin and Myst, A Demon knight, sends a stronger demon in the world. Maron's feather somehow turns into a Rosary, so Maron can turn into Jeanne without Fin's help. Noin, the demon knight, turns into Maron's student teacher and makes Maron's relationship with Chiaki worse, but they overcome that. And as Maron spends her time with Chiaki, she realises that Chiaki is not a bad guy after all. She is deeply hurt, however, when she learns that Chiaki is her rival, Sinbad, and that he only went after her because he knew she was Jeanne. Chiaki wants to explain, but Maron won't listen. Soon, Fin comes back, turned into a Queen, a Da-Tenshi, with loads of demons. Noin, who was Jeanne d'ark's lover, confesses to Maron, and they somehow go back to the time before Jeanne d'ark's trial, when she was in a jail. But Maron had no intention of being Jeanne, for she is heartbroken when she realises that Fin was Da-Tenshi. Jeanne d'ark tells Maron to have more faith in God. Access, another Teshi, (who has a crush on Fin,) tells Maron that Fin has been brainwashed by demons when she got captured. Then Chiaki explains that he tried to stop Maron from getting the chess pieces for he knew that it will cause a lot of problems when Fin returns, and Maron realises that her thinking was wrong. Queen, who tries to kill Jeanne, attacks her, but Noin, protects Maron, for he has sworn to Jeanne d'ark that he would protect Maron even if he dies. Noin, sacrifices himself, but Maron, who became more fearless and courageous, tells Fin that Maron loves her. Fin, who was brainwashed, remembers her memory with Maron and turns back to Tenshi again. The last chapter finishes as Maron opens her mailbox, which contains her parent's mail.

Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch season 1 and Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch pure season 2

Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch (マーメイドメロディーぴちぴちピッチ, Māmeido Merodī Pichi Pichi Pitchi[color:4711=#00e]?
) is a shōjo manga and anime series created by Michiko Yokote, with artwork by Pink Hanamori. The manga was originally published in the monthly shōjo manga anthology Nakayoshi. There are 32 chapters published (including two special stories) and are compiled into seven volumes issued by Kodansha.
A 91-episode anime series was produced by TV Aichi, divided into two seasons, aired in Japan from April 2003 to December 2004. The first season is composed of 52 episodes, while the second, entitled Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch Pure, lasted for 39.

PlotSee also: List of Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch characters and List of Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch episodes

Lucia, Mermaid Princess of the North Pacific Ocean, sets out to land to find the boy she saved from a shipwreck seven years before the beginning of the story, to whom she had entrusted with her pink pearl. She eventually finds the boy: a surfer named Kaito Dōmoto. But as the human form Lucia assumed, named Lucia Nanami, bears very little resemblance to her mermaid form, Kaito cannot recognize her. She cannot tell Kaito who she really is; otherwise, according to mermaid folklore, she would turn into sea-foam. She tries to convince Kaito into figuring out who she really is (since the legend does not say anything about the other person discovering a mermaid's true identity by himself).
At the same time, Lucia has been told that a group of water demons or suiyō (水妖) have invaded the marine world and she must gather the six other Mermaid Princesses and their pearls to bring back the legendary goddess, Aqua Regina, to stop them. To fulfill this, she joins forces with Hanon and Rina, Mermaid Princesses who came up to dry land, use their pearls, turn into singing idols, and use their voices as an offensive power.

An anime adaptation produced by TV Aichi, We've, and Synergy SP and directed by Yoshitaka Fujimoto aired in Japan in two seasons. The first season, simply named Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch and covers manga chapters 1 to 20, aired between April 5, 2003 and March 27, 2004. They were compiled into 14 DVD volumes. The second season, Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch Pure, which adapts events from chapters 21 to 30, was aired between April 3 to December 25, 2004. Unlike the first season, Pure was compiled into two DVD box sets containing a total of 11 discs.
ADV Films acquired the license to the anime on June 2004 for its North American release, but was eventually dropped due to difficulty in finding backers and securing a TV airing deal.[2] While the acquisition of the license and the production of the English anime predated that of the manga, it is unknown if a release will occur. That is because as of 2009, the anime has been completely dubbed but is being held by TV Aichi.
A total of six theme songs were composed for the anime. The first opening theme, "Taiyō no Rakuen ~Promised Land~" (太陽の楽園 ~Promised Land~[color:4711=#00e]?, lit. "Paradise of the Sun ~Promised Land~") by Miyuki Kanbe, and the first ending theme "Daiji na Takarabako" (大事な宝箱[color:4711=#00e]?, lit. "Important Treasure Box") by Asumi Nakata, are used in the first 28 episodes. For 29th to the 52nd episodes, "Rainbow Notes♪" by Kanbe and "Sekai de Ichiban Hayaku Asa ga kuru Basho" (世界で一番早く朝が来る場所[color:4711=#00e]?, lit. "The Place Where Morning Comes First") by Nakata, Hitomi Terakado, and Mayumi Asano, are the second opening and ending themes respectively. For Pure, the opening theme is "Before the Moment" by Eri Kitamura while "Ai no Ondo °C" (愛の温度℃[color:4711=#00e]?, lit. "The Temperature of Love°C") by Nakata, Terakado, and Asano is the ending song.

List of Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch characters

The following is a list of characters from the manga and anime series Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch. They are group according to their roles in the series. Wherever possible, the spelling of the names are taken from the English translation of the Pichi Pichi Pitch manga. Otherwise, spellings are based on those used on official merchandise.

Main CharactersΗ τηλεορασή μου...αγαπημένα anime... - Σελίδα 2 300px-Mermaid3Forms
Three DVD covers showing the three forms of the main characters Lucia (blonde hair), Hanon (blue hair), and Rina (seaweed green hair): mermaid (left cover), human (center cover), idol (right cover).

Lucia Nanami (七海 るちあ, Nanami Ruchia[color:e990=#00e]?
)
Voiced by: Asumi Nakata
Lucia is the Mermaid Princess of the North Pacific Ocean, keeper of the pink pearl, and the main character of the story. She goes up to land to search for her pearl which she used to save a boy seven years ago. She is unaware of the danger in the marine world and of her real mission until she is told of them by her "older sister", Nikora. She is characterized by her simplicity and naïveté, but with having a strong will, typical traits of shōjo manga heroines. Her idol form is Pink Pearl Voice. Of all the mermaids in the series, Lucia's mermaid form and human form contrast the most (Lucia has short dark blonde hair and brown eyes in the surface while having long lighter blonde hair and light blue eyes while at sea).

  • Some fans in the West still spell her name as "Luchia," due to a misunderstanding of the spelling systems of different languages. The Italian name Lucia follows Italian spelling rules, which say that "c" is pronounced as a post-alveolar affricate (the same sound that is written as "ch" in English) when it appears before a front vowel (in this case, "i"). That pronunciation is correctly represented in Japanese kana as るちあ. When attempting to transliterate the kana back into Latin characters, some people, unaware of the Italian spelling of the name, tried using the English "ch" to represent that consonant, resulting in the incorrect spelling "Luchia".

Hanon Hōshō (宝生 波音, Hōshō Hanon[color:e990=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Hitomi Terakado
Hanon is the Mermaid Princess of the South Atlantic Ocean and keeper of the aqua (水色 mizu-iro "water-color") pearl. Unlike Lucia, Hanon goes up to land to escape water creatures. She is perky and feminine, yet a bit more worldly than her friend Lucia. This worldliness is evidenced by many of her actions—especially by her romantic pursuit of her music teacher, Tarō Mitsuki. Her idol form is Mizuiro (Aqua) Pearl Voice, although the first time that it is named in the manga, she is erroneously called Blue Pearl Voice.

Rina Tōin (洞院 リナ, Tōin Rina[color:e990=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Mayumi Asano
Rina is the Mermaid Princess of the North Atlantic Ocean and keeper of the green pearl. Initially she is depicted as beautiful but stern and bent on revenge for the capture of her best friend, Noel. Later, however, she evolves into a more mature character, and acts as an older sister figure to Lucia and Hanon. She seems to love plasma TVs and shows this love in many anime episodes. She also seems to love watching comedy shows. Her idol form is Green Pearl Voice.

  • Some fans in the West still spell her name as Lina, because the Japanese language does not distinguish the sounds "r" and "l", treating them as the same. This means that "ri" and "li" are both represented as リ, and it can be difficult to figure out what the intended romanization is until it is established by official sources.

Supporting Characters

Kaito Dōmoto (堂本 海斗, Dōmoto Kaito[color:e990=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Daisuke Kishio
Kaito, the son of a pair of musicians, is an avid surfer, as well as Lucia's love interest. Though he is popular with girls, he is secretly in love with a beautiful mermaid who saved him from a shipwreck seven years ago, which killed his parents, and has yet to realize that this mermaid is Lucia. Later in the story, it is discovered that beneath Kaito's human exterior lie some distinctively inhuman qualities and that he is the prince of an ancient water race called Panthalassa and is the younger twin brother of Gackto. Kaito has a hard time when Lucia comes in her human form, because of having feelings for both her human form and her mermaid form. Kaito eventually realizes that the two are one, giving Kaito the ability to love Lucia no matter what form she is in.

Hippo (ヒッポ[color:e990=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Miyako Ito
Lucia's guardian who serves as her guide. Hippo accompanies Lucia in her search for her pink pearl, and is among those who voice disapproval of her relationship with Kaito. He is also polite, always putting -さん, -san after every name, even when angry. In the anime, he is shown as Lucia's pet penguin. Later on, he is able to transform into a very cute human boy, as well as a creature called a Hippocampus. In his human form, Hippo falls in love with a Dark Lover, Yuri.

Nikora Nanami (七海 にこら, Nanami Nikora[color:e990=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Eri Saito
Nikora is the virtual manager of the "petit-hotel" Pearl Piari (プチ ホテル パール ピアリ, puchi-hoteru pāru piari[color:e990=#00e]?) on land, where Lucia, Hanon, and Rina work (in the manga, she is the owner of a bath house called Pearl Waters). A purple mermaid, she poses as Lucia's older sister in order to inform her of her mission. In the last chapter of the manga, it is discovered that she is seven years older than Lucia.
Madame Taki (タキさん, Taki-san[color:e990=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Kumi Yamakado
Madame Taki is the owner of the Pearl Piari. A fairly major character in the anime who is a fortune teller and friend to the mermaid princesses. It was also shown in Episode 13 that she can turn into a clam, possibly so she can swim under water and for protection.

Tarō Mitsuki (海月 太郎, Mitsuki Tarō[color:e990=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Daisuke Kirii
Tarō is Lucia's music teacher and Hanon's love interest (she refers to him as 太郎ちゃん, Tarō-chan). He had met a mermaid in the past (Sara), and made a piano piece for her, not knowing what happened to her after their last meeting.

Noel (ノエル, Noeru[color:e990=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Ryōko Nagata
Noel is the Mermaid Princess of the Arctic Ocean and keeper of the deep blue (i.e. 藍色, ai-iro) pearl. She helped Rina escape from the sea monsters, which led to her capture. She is calm, gentle, caring, and studious (as she sometimes wears glasses on land later in the second season of the anime). She is Caren's older twin sister by about a minute at the most. Noel cares deeply for Caren, the one that she had always wanted to meet. Her idol form is Ai-iro (Deep Blue) Pearl Voice.

  • In the third volume of the English manga, ai-iro was translated as indigo, but deep blue makes more sense regarding the character's colour scheme; the colours may be based on the rainbow, but Lucia is pink, not red.
  • Some refer to Noel's name as Noelle, because originally Noel is a male name, while Noelle is the female form, but the official English translation as well as the official Japanese romanization uses Noel.

Caren (かれん, Karen[color:e990=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Ema Kogure
Caren is the Mermaid Princess of the Antarctic Ocean, keeper of the purple pearl, and twin sister of Noel. In the anime, she first appears as the winner of a beauty contest that the main trio enters; in the manga, she first appears to save them from the Dark Lovers. In the first season, Tarō asks her about his mermaid, and she later blames Rina for Noel's kidnapping. Even after things are straightened out, she chooses to go find Noel alone. She is Noel's polar opposite, having a mysterious personality. Caren and Noel are twins, born on opposite sides of the Earth. When Caren finally meets Noel, she launches herself at Noel, hugging her and calling her Onee-sama, a respectful term for big sister. Even though the two had not met before, Caren cares most for Noel and would do anything to save her, even if it meant Caren having to find her on her own. While she is cold and distant in the first season, she is found to be wild, humorous, and even a bit strange in the second. Her idol form is Purple Pearl Voice.
Coco (ココ, Koko[color:e990=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Satomi Arai
Coco is the Mermaid Princess of the South Pacific Ocean and keeper of the yellow pearl. She is incarcerated by the sea monsters for most of the first season, so not much is known about her other than that she is a friend of fellow Mermaid Princess Sara. In the manga, she found to be playful and gentle, yet brash and outspoken in the anime. Her idol form is Yellow Pearl Voice.

Aqua Regina (アクア・レジーナ様, Akua Rejīna-sama[color:e990=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Kumi Yamakado
Aqua Regina is the ocean goddess who gives the Mermaid Princesses new songs and upgrades for their gear. However, this is all that she can do alone after expending a great deal of energy thousands of years ago. She is needed to ultimately stop the sea monsters, and the seven pearls have to be gathered to summon her; Gaito/Gakuto seeks to summon her as well, so that he can use her to destroy the world. Aqua Regina later gives bands to the mermaids to upgrade their singing power; as in many magical girl series, this is signified by adding frills and accessories to their dresses. She also upgrades their microphones in the end of season one, before she is finally summoned. At the end of the manga, Aqua Regina reveals that Lucia is to be her successor.
The following characters primarily appeared in the Pure season of the anime:

Seira (星羅[color:e990=#00e]?
)
Voiced by: Eri Kitamura
Seira is the future Mermaid Princess of the Indian Ocean and future keeper of the orange pearl. She appears as a spirit to Lucia, taking the form of a young mermaid. When her time of birth finally came, Michel seized his chance and absorbed Seira into his body, and her birth was therefore delayed until Lucia could retrieve all the pieces of her heart contained in Michel's feathers. Every time Lucia retrieves a piece of her heart from one of Michel's fallen feathers, Seira learns something about an emotion, such as love or friendship. Once born, she is destined to become Orange Pearl Voice. Seira is very child-like and sees the good in Michel, realizing that he has good intentions for the earth.

Michal Amagi (天城みかる, Amagi Mikaru[color:e990=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Ryoko Shintani
Michal is the girl who finds Kaito after he had lost his memories. She's a rich, yet desperately lonely girl who has lost all hope; she falls "in love" with Kaito to the point that, in Lucia's perspective, he has forgotten his mermaid love completely, and is desperate that he return her feelings. Michal also seems to be a sickly girl, collapsing to the floor every time Michel appears somewhere else or when Kaito is near Lucia (in order to keep Kaito to herself). In the manga, when Kaito states that he loves only Lucia and could never love Michal the way that she "loves him", Michal takes off her clothes and offers herself to him in desperation of keeping him; Kaito turns away from her and leaves. This is a large trigger for her collapses and allows Michel to take control of her. In the end, Michal is reborn and given to her brother to raise her from scratch.

Rihito Amagi (天城リヒト, Amagi Rihito[color:e990=#00e]?
)
Voiced by: Takahiro Mizushima
Rihito is an orchestra conductor and Michal's older brother. After initially seeing Kaito and Lucia at the airport, he becomes a "bridge" for the two. He observes Kaito's progress in regaining his memories (despite his sister being around) while he checks on Lucia and comforts her as she copes with the loss of her emotional bond. Rihito tries hard to get Michal to realize that she could never be with Kaito even though she doesn't want to hear it. In the anime, when Kaito leaves after telling Michal that he loves Lucia, Rihito restrains Michal from going after Kaito. When Michal is reborn, he promises that he will care for her and raise her again. It is later revealed that both he and Michal are part of the same race as Kaito, leaving Rihito to believe that that is the true reason why Michal is attracted to Kaito.

Masahiro Hamasaki (浜崎雅弘, Hamasaki Masahiro[color:e990=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Kiyotaka Furushima
Masahiro is a flirtatious boy who has a crush on Rina. He wears glasses, rides a motorcycle and does some amateur boxing. It is later revealed that he comes from a family running a boxing gym. At the end of the manga, Masahiro is Rina's boyfriend.

  • In the manga, he is introduced earlier (before Gaito/Gackto is even defeated) and is so mysterious that he is only known by his surname. The name "Masahiro" was not created by the animation team, but by Pink Hanamori's staff, as revealed in the fifth volume of the manga.

Nagisa Shirai (白井 渚, Shirai Nagisa[color:e990=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Chihiro Kusaka
Nagisa is a young boy who has a crush on Hanon. After retrieving some sheet music for Hanon, he has been wooing her ever since. Unfortunately for him, the sheet music is of the tune Tarō Mitsuki dedicated to Hanon, which only reminds her of her fixation on the much more refined and older man. Still, his resilience is to be admired, and she eventually treats him better. In the manga, he says that he is two years younger than Hanon. In the end, Hanon falls in love with Nagisa and they have a relationship at the end of the manga.
Minor recurring characters
Though there are several minor characters on both sides who appear within both the manga and the anime series, the following listed below have played significant roles in the story.

Sara's servant (Bāya)
A manga-only character, she is Sara's servant and guardian from childhood, and worries about Sara's involvement with Gackto. However, Sara treats the woman like garbage and refuses to listen to her. The old woman therefore helps the princesses in secret to atone for what her ward has become. She is actually at the root of the incident that caused the events in the story.
Momo-chan (ももちゃん[color:e990=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Naomi Wakabayashi
A pink dolphin from Lucia's realm. Initially appeared being showcased in an indoor aquarium for curiosity. After being rescued by the Mermaid Princesses and reunited with its mother, its role is later reduced to occasional messenger. While the Mermaid Princesses could communicate with it using their inner voices, whenever it is with Kaito, he can easily understand the meaning of its gestures.

Meru (芽流[color:e990=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Ema Kogure
A young South Atlantic mermaid coming up to land asking the Mermaid Princesses for help in finding her mother. Like many of the mermaids, she is displeased seeing Hanon and Lucia having relationships with humans, at which Yūri takes advantage. However, she is enamored by Kaito so much that not only she changed her outlook about relationships with humans, but also makes a second appearance in the anime just to ask his hand (playfully) for marriage, to Lucia's chagrin.

Maki (真木[color:e990=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Keijin Okuda
The owner of the nearby beach house where Lucia, Hanon, Rina, and Kaito work part-time. He is a widower and still keeps a picture of his late wife Saori at his bar. He is attracted to Nikora, leading to a marraige proposal which the latter called off (due to conflicting feelings).
Antagonists
Marine antagonists

Gackto (楽斗/ガクト, Gakuto[color:e990=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Daisuke Kishio
Gackto is the leader of the sea monsters who is bent on taking over the marine world. He is always depicted drinking wine, and wearing black. His resemblance to Kaito made the latter a subject of initial ire by Rina. He is known in the anime as Gaito (ガイト). He is in one episode turned into Kaito and seems to get feelings for Lucia's human form.

  • There is no definite reason for the name change from the original "Gakuto" in the manga to "Gaito" in the anime, but one obvious reason is to distinguish him from J-Pop star Gackt, whose name is spelled the same way in katakana. In the Del Rey manga translation, the above spelling is used in order to emphasize the comparison between the character and the singer.

The Dark Lovers (ダーク・ラバーズ, Dāku Rabāzu[color:e990=#00e]?)
Gackto's four female followers who serve him in exchange for his love for them. There are composed of the following:

Izuru (イズール, Izūru[color:e990=#00e]?)

Voiced by: Sayori Ishizuka
Izuru is the most mature of the four, she has the power to control waves and marine beasts and has the ability to create dragons from water. She is also the most obsessed with winning the heart of Gakuto.
Eriru (エリル, Eriru[color:e990=#00e]?)

Voiced by: Yuki Matsuoka
Eriru is the one with the multiple personality disorder. At one phase, she is cute, beady-eyed, and acting as if she were antsy (spinning around and never saying any normal speech). In another phase she can speak correctly and is more observant of her surroundings. In her third phase, when threatened (or when she spins around), she becomes scary, her eyes glow red, and she changes her voice accordingly.

Maria (マリア[color:e990=#00e]?)

Voiced by: Sanae Kobayashi
Maria is the one closest to Gackto in terms of love. She is also very cruel at times, and sometimes seems to see Gackto more as a boy-toy than a love prospect. She has the power to make and/or manipulate ice and snow.

Yūri (ユーリ, Yūri[color:e990=#00e]?)

Voiced by: Chieko Honda
Yūri is the youngest-looking of the four. She has the ability to control people and objects, especially with the use of her music and, if any, a nearby piano. Although Yūri is loyal to Gackto, his continued treatment of her as a child leads her to a star-crossed relationship with Hippo, i.e. his human form.

Black Beauty Sisters (ブラック・ビューティー・シズターズ, Burakku Byūtī Shizutāzu[color:e990=#00e]?)
They are composed of the red-wearing older sister Sheshe (シスターシェシェ, Shisutā Sheshe[color:e990=#00e]?, Voiced by: Miki Tsuchiya) and the blue-wearing younger sister Mimi (シスターミミ, Shisutā Mimi[color:e990=#00e]?, Voiced by: Noriko Shitaya). Gackto hires them after the Dark Lovers' failed attempts to capture the Mermaid Princesses. These two have the ability to sing tunes more powerful than the songs the Mermaid Princesses themselves sing, although in the anime and the second arc of the manga, the Princesses manage to get strong enough to overpower them. Though Gackto turned them back to their original forms (two angler fishes), they are brought back in the second season after being revived by that season's antagonist, Michel, and made them his servants. It has been shown that Mimi has a human form. She is the only one whose hair gets longer and wears glasses over her (in human form only) brown eyes. In human form, Sheshe looks the same, but loses her horns, demon ears, and other inhuman body parts.

Sara (沙羅[color:e990=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Kana Ueda
Sara is the Mermaid Princess of the Indian Ocean and keeper of the orange pearl. She joins Gackto in his quest to take over the marine world after an incident bestowed her a dark power, turning both her orange hair and her orange pearl pitch black (though her eyes stay orange) and destroying her own kingdom. That incident was a proposed rendezvous with Tarō, her secret human lover, in which he never showed up. (In the manga, he actually arrived before, but Sara's guardian found out about the relationship and insisted that he leave, convincing Sara that he had abandoned her.) In a fury, Sara unleashed a wave of power, destroying her kingdom and causing the wave which killed Kaito's parents and from which Lucia saved Kaito. In the manga, her villain name is Black Pearl Voice and she transforms into an idol in a black dress reminiscent of a diva. However, in the anime, she does not transform until she turns good, and instead has the power to sing offensively in a humanoid, amphibious form like the villains and mermaid idols, with or without her E-Pitch microphone. In the end, she decides to join the other mermaids as is her duty. She, herself, seals the gate to Gakuto's castle in the book because it's her duty and she unsealed the gate after her kingdom was destroyed. In the TV show, Aqua Regina seals the gate and Sara goes with Gaito because she loves him. The manga shows that she goes with him because she realizes that he is the one that needs her the most and that what he did was partly out of love for her and the want to make her happy. She also appears in the second season as a spirit, informing Lucia of the future Orange Pearl Voice and offering her assistance where she can. Sara is also seen singing with the other mermaid princesses in the very last episode of Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch Pure.
Winged antagonists

Michel (ミケル, Mikeru[color:e990=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Junko Minagawa
Michel resembles an angel and is the one who launched a personal vendetta against the Mermaid Princesses after learning their relations with the human world. Although he is strong enough to resist any song the Mermaid Princesses would dish out against him until the finale, he is cursed with a weak body. He steals both Kaito's memories and Seira's heart in order to keep himself alive. In the manga, it is revealed that Michel is under the control of Fuku and is very good and gentle at heart. Michel is an ancient angel and is disgusted by what humans had done to the Earth that him and the other angels created. This explains why he needs Michal's body, Seira's heart, the heart of a mermaid princess, which means a fairly large amount of power, and Kaito's memories because he is a very powerful prince whose powers may rival those of the mermaid princesses. Michel believes that "angels" and mermaids are superior beings to humans because both species understand the importance of the Earth and each have powers, in one form or another.

Fuku (フクちゃん, Fuku-chan[color:e990=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Sanae Kobayashi
Fuku appears like a super deformed angel with the head of a boy and the body of a bird. He's Michel's "right hand man", as well as his messenger to his servants, but at times orders around even Michel. He turns out to have a larger role later in the story.
The Great One (あの方, Ano kata[color:e990=#00e]?, him/that gentleman)
Voiced by: Hajime Iijima
A spirit in the form of a flame atop of Michel's castle, he guards it for him. At one point, Fuku-chan claims that his words are Michel's words, and Michel's are That One's words, and That One's are God's words. He has a higher authority than Michel and has a strange relationship with Fuku-chan, where it is unclear who is in charge. During the final battle, it is revealed that he is, like Michel, a pawn.

Lady Bat (レディバット, Rēdī-batto[color:e990=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Sanae Kobayashi
Lady Bat calls himself "the wings of love and pleasure." Michel's vampire-like servant. His song hypnotizes the listeners into his spell so he could "bite" the person while they are asleep. There is certain controversy about his real gender, especially among fans in the West; in the manga, Lady Bat is actually a man wearing women's clothes. He is also strong enough to bring the Idol-form Princesses back into Mermaid-form. While in the manga Lady Bat identifies himself using feminine pronouns, in anime he uses the masculine pronoun "boku" Another difference is that in the manga he is about as tall as Mimi and his ponytail is shoulder length; while in the anime he is considerably taller (slightly taller than Lanhua) and his ponytail reaches the waist. Also, in some anime episodes, when concealing himself, he has worn male clothes. In his real form he has dark red hair and lavender-colored eyes; while in his human disguise form the hair is black and the eyes are greenish-blue.

Lanhua (蘭花, Ranfa[color:e990=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Megumi Kojima
Lanhua calls herself "the wings of desire and contentment." Michel's butterfly-like servant. She can divide into a dozen smaller versions of herself (which really do not look harmful or dangerous; in fact, very cute) to play a tune that makes the listeners dance until they die. She is called Ranfa and Lang Fa in some merchandise, but the English translators for the manga decided to follow the Mandarin Chinese pronunciation of her name. In her real form she has purple hair and red eyes, in her human disguise form the eyes are brown and the hair color is the same.

Alala (あらら, Arara[color:e990=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Masayo Kurata
Alala calls herself "the wings of dreams and decadence." Michel's fairy-like servant. She's quite peppy and upbeat most of the time. She sings two songs in the anime; a peppy song that shoots stars at the Princesses and a sugary sweet song that makes men cheer for her. In the manga, she can make people (or at least a Mermaid Princess) dream about anything she wishes, including nightmares. In her real form she has green hair and pink eyes, in her human disguise form the eyes are brown and the hair color is the same (albeit retaining her pointy ears).

Mamotte! Lollipop

Mamotte! Lollipop (まもって! ロリポップ, Mamotte! Roripoppu[color:48f2=#00e]?) is a Japanese shōjo manga series written and illustrated by Michiyo Kikuta (菊田 みちよ, Kikuta Michiyo[color:48f2=#00e]?). It was serialized in the magazine Nakayoshi and published by Kodansha in Japan between February 2003 and July 2005.
The story revolves around female protagonist Nina Yamada, a seventh grader who accidentally swallows the Crystal Pearl thinking it was candy. The pearl is the goal of a sorcery examination where the students must retrieve it to pass. But since Nina has swallowed the pearl, she is now the target. Fortunately for Nina, two of the examinees decide to protect her from the other students while they work on a potion to extract the pearl from Nina.
In 2006, Mamotte! Lollipop was adapted into a thirteen episode anime television series by Marvelous Entertainment and Sunshine Corporation under the direction of Noriyoshi Nakamura (中村憲由, Nakamura Noriyoshi[color:48f2=#00e]?). The anime series aired between July 1, 2006 and September 2006 in Japan on KAB.

Plot
Nina Yamada is a junior high 7th grader who dreams about a boy who is strong, handsome, and kind enough to protect her. One day, Nina "accidentally" swallowed a Crystal Pearl that she assumed was candy. But the Crystal Pearl was the goal of a sorcery examination. Nina becomes the new target by many probationer sorcerers and goes on for half a year. During this whole mix up, she meets two wizard boys named Zero and Ichii and comes to a conclusion that they can protect her until a potion is made to remove the Crystal Pearl from her. However, this potion will take about 6 months to complete. Despite how long it took they decided to protect no matter what. Even at school and at home, Zero and Ichii protect Nina where ever she goes.

Main characters

Nina Yamada (山田二菜(ニナ), Yamada Nina[color:48f2=#00e]?)
Voiced by: Yui Shoji (Japanese), Brittany Karbowski (English)

Nina is a 7th grade girl with an aggressive character, though she is also a caring, child-like, sweet teenager most of the time. She doesn't take insults very well. This is shown when she is often clashing with Zero, who usually calls her "stupid" or "idiot".

She is targeted by many sorcerer examinees as she accidentally swallowed the Crystal Pearl which they need in order to pass their professional wizard exam. Zero and Ichii are her guardians. Her hobby is to stretch, or do sit-ups. Nina is extremely bad at all forms of housework, but she does not seem to realize this.

In the end she decides that she loves Zero. In one of the chapters in the manga, Nina and Zero kiss when Heart attacked them (causing a smoke screen)but Nina was unaware until Zero confessed to it at the end of Volume 5. In volume 6 Nina realizes that Zero is her one true love. In volume seven of Mamotte! Lollipop, as an adult of twenty two years, she is depicted with shorter hair and lives in the magic world. She later on accepts Zero's proposal of marriage.

In the side-story of the sequel, Modotte! Mamotte! Lollipop!, she and Zero were married and have 2 kids, Rei (the second protagonist of the side-story), and Mina.

Zero (ゼロ[color:48f2=#00e]?)
Zero has aqua blue hair and seems to appear the same age as Nina.

Zero has a very rude and cocky personality, often shown clashing with Nina. He owns little tolerance and is highly rebellious towards those who get in his in way. Zero is a particularly an impatient person and has an extremely short temper.

He is often shown making fun of Nina, therefore, always getting himself into arguments with her. But despite the way he treats Nina, it soon becomes clear that he is in love with her and truly wishes to protect her from any harm. Their relationship gradually becomes better throughout the series, and in the manga, he even admits his love to her.

In the sequel of Modotte! Mamotte! Lollipop!, in a side-story, he and Nina got married and have 2 children named Rei and Mina, the protagonist in the side-story's name is Itsuki In the anime television series, Zero is voiced by Miki Ōtani in Japanese and Eric Vale in English.

Ichii (イチイ[color:48f2=#00e]?)
Ichii is 2 years older than Nina and Zero. He is also depicted as a kind and gentle-natured boy. He is also exceedingly polite and mature, thus making him a gentleman.

He had a rough past, but opened up more ever since that day he met Zero, approximately three years ago, which he later tells Nina that he loves Zero in a side story of Modotte! Mamotte! Lollipop. He has a sister (Not biologically) whom he used to only trust until Zero came along. His specialty is "defense magic". It also show on the side story on the last volume, he married Rokka, who chased Ichii in the start of the magical exam in Mamotte! Lollipop and so forth, and have one child named Itsuki, who is the protagonist of the side story, who is in love with Rei, who is Nina's and Zero's son.In the anime television series, Ichii is voiced by Daisuke Nakamura in Japanese and J. Michael Tatum in English.
